Deep in Appalachian coal country, Ella grows up hard at the hands of her abusive, alcoholic father. After high school, she's asked out on her very first date, and it ends in rape. Then she meets Paul, the man she will marry -- and the real trouble begins.
Each time Ella is knocked down she gets up a little stronger and a bit more twisted. Eventually rage takes over and it's her turn to call the dance. In her mind, several people need payback, and she's going all out to settle up.

Based on the description, I thought this book would have been better. It wasn't bad, but it was just okay.

The first three quarters of the book dragged. Too much unnecessary dialogue and almost exhausting to get to the point. At times I had to skip-read through the material just to keep from getting bored. The characters were descriptive enough for you to understand their lives but just too many unnecessary words, as if the author was paid by the word.

Then, all of a sudden the book speeds up, revenge it taken and the story is concluded. The ending was rushed, as if suddenly the author was tired and wanted things to end. I most certainly did! The ending was no surprise and personally, I think a bit trite.

Anyway, I finished it and now I'm on to another story.

Ella edition by John Crusey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

They say that truth is stranger than fiction, and that certainly holds true in this case. The fact that this story is based on a person's real life experience is incredible! It's an amazing story of a girl who is continually faced with what would be insurmountable hardships for most, only to rise again ever stronger than before. The author adeptly draws the reader in to feel compassion and concern for the heroine, all the while anxious to learn where the next turn in her journey will take her. This is a quick read, hard to put down and impossible to forget.
I just couldn't put this book down. I've read a lot of " BEST " books, but this one is right at the top. I recommend this book to anyone over 18. It has a lot of cursing in it by the father of Ella. I tried to over look the bad words. But then it is about the coal mine country. It was a good read. Author JOHN CRUSEY did himself proud with this one.
I was completely invested in Ella's character from the first page. Crusey paints her as a real, vulnerable, but overwhelmingly triumphant character. From her abusive childhood to her continuing bad luck with men, Ella had me rooting for her the whole way. I had the pleasure of meeting John Crusey when he spoke to a college course I taught a few summers ago and he is a delightful man with a background as interesting as his characters. I am looking forward to his future books!
So much heartache, suffering and disappointment - all by the time she's 20. But Ella always finds a way to push on...I'm not sure if it speaks to the human spirit or the heart of a woman, but Ella's determination is inspiring...and a bit surprising. I would actually like to meet the real 'Ella' this book is based on.

The more you read 'Ella', the harder it is to put down, and once you past the halfway point, it's nearly impossible!

This is a great read...I was not disappointed, and you won't be either!
OMGEEEESH!!!! I loved this book! Talk about a real page turner! A real thrill ride in the end....WOW!!!!! Talk about a book that will play with your emotions when it comes to men down right ticken you off well this book will do it!BUT, the end makes you wanna scream"HELL YEAH! YOU GO GIRL!" Great read with a touchy subject"rape",but worth the read without a doubt! A well played game on Ellas part in the end.Hope you take the time to give it a read.Happy reading!
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It pulled me in and I read it in about three days. The characters were well developed and the story was interesting. I did find the ending a little over the top, but what the hey, it was fun. Though I don't think this book is a true story, maybe based on a true story. If you like novels about women and their perils, this is for you. One formatting problem bothered me a bit, that was the new paragraph indent was far too many spaces and I found it distracting. This could easily be fixed by the author. Anyway, I downloaded this book over a year ago and finally got around to reading it. Sorry it took me so long. Good going John Crusey. You tell a great yarn.
This book had me hooked from the beginning to the end, a real page turner. And this being a true story really made you feel for Ella and all of her hardships from the time she was young. She was a smart girl and was trying to break the cycle and be smarter than her environment. She thought she found prince charming, but was she ever wrong, and she missed a lot of signs along the way that should have been red flags before she married him, but she was young and in love. When things got really bad for Ella she was still smart about her decisions, even went to college and tough as nails sleeping in a car for months in a woods in the dead of winter, oh my, I think you could only do that if you were in her situation and scared to be found by anyone. But at least it all has a good ending, she's a hero, because you cheer for her, and she's a villan because you can't believe how bold she is, but I was proud of her. Good book for all, highly recommended
