This one, despite the appealing title, has lived on my kindle unvisited for years, probably one of the first downloads, so why not. Granted, I don't read as much genre as I used to, but every so often it seems like I ought to check out a new author or two, see if I make some discoveries. Then again, after having read professionally published mainstream fiction, it can be tough to enjoy these less than labors of love. And having that been said, this actually was pretty decent for what it was, which is a kindle freebie (at the time) early short story collection by an unknown. Despite the occasionally jejune slip ups and some genuinely terrible spelling, plot wise these stories showed a good amount of potential, especially when the author veers away from the standard vampire and zombie fare. Some of the stories were actually pretty good and the denouement really elevated this anthology, tying it all together nicely. I'm never going to quite understand or condone shabby editing, it seems like that would be the easiest part of putting a book out, but this collection was just about entertaining enough to kinda sort warrant this magnanimously generous rating. Really enjoyed this book. This was one anthology that had more hits than misses. Don't pass this one by.
Good stories..some of them left you hanging, while others just ended with a whimper....good characters throughout book....

I purchased this on kindle because it was inexpensive and had fairly good reviews. I'm very glad I did this was an extremely enjoyable collection of short stories. They were well written and original enough to keep your attention. I highly recommend giving this writer a try!
I loved this book which brought me back to my youth and my facination for the old TV shows, "The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits!" It was so thought provokingly scary, that the book should come with a parental warning "not to be used as bedtime stories for children"! Thanks Mr. Barrett for such enjoyable,reading even if I did have to do it in the daytime!
The stories in this collection range from hit to dead center bull's eye. Everyone was enjoyable, but a few deserve special mention. My favorite were
In the End, We Are Like Our Fathers It is hard to do anything new with the trope of zombies (see anything George Romero did after "Day of the Dead") but Barrett manages to pull the trick off, in a funny tale that utilizes magical realism to show what would happen if living humans were forced to share their high-school halls with zombies. Barrett has a sharp sense of humor.
The China People of Oz This is the moving, incredibly creepy tale of a girl with a terminal illness, whose last wish is to visit Kansas, the place where the "Oz" stories are set. This poignant, disturbing story sort of reminded me of the film "Labyrinth."
Mr. Klein's Cancer This one is uproariously funny, and frankly ingenious. A put-upon high-school teacher with a terminal illness and a classroom full of cruel ingrates, hits upon an inspired way to both rid himself of his disease, and inflict the same on his hapless students. Without giving too much away, Barrett once again demonstrates his impish sense of humor, and also flaunts his strong imaginative gifts in a delightful tale.
Honorable mention goes also to the final tale, "The Writing Program," about a man who labors in a foundry for a Lovecraftian Rube Goldberg machine with an agenda of its own. At his best, Barrett recalls Richard Matheson at top form, or Stephen King in his "Graveyard Shift" era.
