I wasn't sure about this book based on the other reviews but I enjoyed it in the end. It's probably not up the same standard as the author usually writes but it's still worth reading if you are a fan like me.It did kill me a little that Nick took so long to recognise that he was in love with the H, but it wasn't painful like it often is in other books.

I re-read this book after a general lack of new reads in the Regency genre. The above review was written just as I began doing reviews and is therefore a bit lacking in detail. The h hears of a wager between two rakes of the ton and offers to be the judge of who is the best lover. She arranges to meet the two gentlemen under conditions of extreme secrecy. The h is a widow and very bitter towards marriage because of her less than satisfactory experience with an older husband. She is not interested in marrying again but is curious as to whether there is more to the marital act than she's experienced. I loved both the gentlemen and the secondary love story is very sweet. It's a tough road to our hea but such a lovely journey. For those that wish to know, this author incorporates steamy scenes in her books.

Well, all the prior reviews have done justice. This book is funny in all the right places. The characters were very likable. It is exactly what a romance novel should be. The sensuality was appropriate and not too raw for Regengcy. It's a story about how 2 rakes discover what they fear most. The focus is mainly on the Duke and the heroine and the Earl's story is secondary. The heroine has a very strong character, opinionated, and not afraid to express her thoughts. It a story about a journey one takes to go through the emotions to then realize that love is found and not completely lost. Very romantic tale!
I agree that the prior reviews were spot on. It is exactly what a romance novel should be. It's a story about how 2 rakes making a bet but discovering that some bets are not worth making. The focus is mainly on the Duke and the heroine and the Earl's story is secondary, but I loved both tories. The major heroine and to an extent the secondary heroine had strong charactera, opinionated, and not afraid to express her thoughts. It a story about a journey one takes to go through the emotions to then realize that love is found and not always lost. Ms Wilde seems to be able to get her characters just right..not too flowery, not too inisipid!!
Loved this book. Rated it a 5 (personal scale) and I only have 20 books that I've ever rated that high. For the record, I have 3000+ romance novels in my database. Well written. Dialog you believe. Sensuous sex scenes. Laughed out loud on a couple of paragraphs. Hard to find a book that has a little humor, sex scenes that are erotic, graphic, but not crude, and a decent plot.
I was worried that this book might be too indecent for me from the title - but I found from the very beginning this was a very moving and romantic story where the two most well known handsome and rich rakes of London fall in love and marry two wonderful women who I could really like. In fact, all four characters were very nice and interesting.
The story starts with the outrageous bet between the very drunk Derek Drake, the Earl and Manderville and his friend Nicholas Manning, the Duke of Rothay. This bet was who was the best lover and was entered into the betting books at White's. This all led to an encounter that changed Nicholas' life and led Derek to finally realized his feelings towards a young woman who had just become engaged to someone else.
This story was fun and came to a very satisfying end with lots of happy everlasting which is what I like!
I have enjoyed Emma Wildes' short stories (see my review of Reformed Rakes) but I wanted to read a full novel--this is it! The story of Lady Caroline Wynn, a young and beautiful red-haired, silver-eyed widow whose former husband was cruel, particularly in the bedroom. Since his death, she has held herself distant and chaste from all suitors, but then comes the opportunity to see what the best rakes can teach her...a wager made between the dark and handsome Duke of Rothay and the blonde, blue-eyed "angel" Earl of Manderville while they were drunk as to who is the best lover. All of London has bet on the outcome but who will judge this race? No one knows that Caroline has agreed to be the judge and she wants to keep it that way. The two men agree to her request for secrecy. She'll have one week with each of the two rakes...but will she ever get past the Duke of Rothay who is teaching her more than she ever dreamed? It's a story that held my interest and being a romantic, I loved the ending! You will, too!
As many reviewers before me have given a synopsis of the plot, I won't bore you with the same. I will say that once I started reading this story, it was very hard to put down. The writing was intelligent, the characters and their actions believable and the love scenes were a great compliment to the story, unlike in some other novels where they simply are the story. I fell in love with Nicholas, cheered on Caroline and thoroughly despised the dreaded cousin. However, I was so enthralled with that couple, that I found myself skimming over the story of Derek and Annabelle until the end. My only complaint was that some of the words and phrases used by the author were either not used in Regency England ('Superfine' to describe a coat is just one example) or not used in that time period in the connotation used by the author ('making love' did not mean sex, but simply wooing.) This use of modern words/terminology tended to pull me out of the story rather abruptly, but I had little trouble being pulled back in. I would recommend this book.
I wasn't sure about this book based on the other reviews but I enjoyed it in the end. It's probably not up the same standard as the author usually writes but it's still worth reading if you are a fan like me.
It did kill me a little that Nick took so long to recognise that he was in love with the H, but it wasn't painful like it often is in other books.
